It has now become a tradition to go out for afternoon tea to celebrate my birthday. I love the fine china, the tiny cakes and dainty sandwiches. It started because I loved Downton Abbey and we imagined ourselves as upper class English people sipping on our tea and spending our afternoon leisurely – the exact opposite of the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is a proper treat which is well deserved once a year.
The Essex in Godshill puts on an amazing afternoon tea. You can pick from a standard afternoon tea or a themed one. The themes are; Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, Willy Wonka, Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Christmas. The scones are warm and freshly baked and the cakes are delicate and decorated to the theme.
The chocolates are handmade from Chocolate Island, a delicious chocolate maker next door. The sandwiches were a little dry and they had butter in which I had asked them not to put in but this was relatively minor, I just ate the egg mayonnaise ones where I couldn’t taste the butter.
The table was decorated with playing cards and heart confetti. A frame with my favourite quote in was on the table with a little hat with rabbit ears and a glass bottle saying ‘eat me’ (I assume they put the wrong tag on). Overrall it was a great day – good food with great people and I will definitely be doing it again.
